- German Shepherds are vibrant, intelligent, working dogs that are eager to please.
1. What is your yard/land like? Adequate room to run that is fenced in?
2. Can you devote at least one hour per day to playing and exercising with your German Shepherd?
3. Will your puppy be part of your family, inside your house as part of your family? German Shepherds adapt to this better than most breeds.
4. Do you have children or are planning to have children and how that will effect the puppy?
5. Are you able to crate train and housebreak your puppy?
6. Your German Shepherd needs high quality, healthy food, just as you do. Can you provide that?
7. Learn about the temperaments of working line and show line German Shepherds. They are not the same.
8. Investigate trainers and obedience classes available in your area. Make sure they understand the difference between a working class
German Shepherd and the average pet store puppy.
9. Be aware of the commitment required to adequately socialize your German Shepherd puppy so they will be a well mannered, well trained
dog. German Shepherds are very strong physically and mentally, so be prepared to handle that.
10. Do you want to train your puppy for search and rescue, protection, Schutzhund, etc? This takes a large commitment for both of you.
11. There is a monetary expense for caring for a dog of this caliber. Are you prepared?
12. If you plan to breed this dog be aware that you should have five years minimum experience as a breeder. Be educated as a canine breeder
knowledgeable in reproduction, development, genetics and proper care of newborn pups. Knowledge in neonatal care, complications and
emergencies is important.
